Uncle Lewy

Living out loud with Lewy Body Dementia

Radio Recall

I took a chance last night in my quest to get Matt out a bit more

I bought tickets to a local performance called “Radio Recall”

It is part of a summer series here in Sonoma, performed in a beautiful outdoor stage as the sun sets

The show was a reliving of the “soundtrack of your life”, covering hits for those of us who were born and lived through the 70’s & 80’s

The lead male played Jesus in the Broadway recent remake (50th anniversary run) of Jesus Christ Superstar which produced some very memorable songs back in the day

He and his co-star of this show last night met when she played Mary to his Jesus

There was a song they covered that moved me, brought me to tears

When the evening shadows and the stars appear

And there is no one there to dry your tears

I could hold you for a million years

To make you feel my love

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet

But I would never do you wrong

I’ve known it from the moment that we met

No doubt in my mind where you belong

I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue

I’d go crawling down the avenue

There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do

To make you feel my love

A portion of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love”

There is so much here…..its so beautiful….I felt like I heard it for the first time last night, it moved me to tears

“Evening shadows”, while certainly not what Bob meant when he wrote it, speaks to the struggles we have in the evenings when Uncle Lewy stirs up his anxiety, stirs up his delusions

“I know you haven’t made your mind up yet” speaks to the moments Matt’s delusions cut to the core, when he thinks I have some nefarious plan to doom him, or cheat on him, or put him away

I know, I know, I would never do him wrong, but in these retched moments of Uncle Lewy infused doubts, he isn’t sure, hasn’t made his mind up

They talked in the show about how this song has lasted through so much time, passed the test of time, because its just such good song writing

I could not agree more

The other song I love but can not sing anymore because I get so choked up, I even choke up thinking about it

“You’ve Got a Friend”, written by Carole King but most famously recorded by James Taylor

It always reminds me to 2 very powerful things: first, it reminds me of my Dad who was a friend to so many, always lending a helping hand to those around him

We played this at his celebration of life service, it was the song chosen

Secondly, and even more powerfully, it touches me so deeply because it reminds me of the golden blessings I have in life, my true deep friends

If you are reading this and you know you are one of those soul mate friends of mine, this is for you, I hear this song and feel deeply my honor, my blessing, my true priveledge of knowing you, having you in my life

I cried when they sang that song, tears were streaming down my face, there was little I could do to stop them

Matt made it through the show, without incident

That’s not to say it was easy, I didn’t take my eyes off of him for sure

His highlight, he most likely will say, is the full scoop of mint chocolate ice cream he got from the Sweet Scoops cart before the show

But for me, the songs in the show were so very moving, so wonderful to sing to, some so very touching

An experiment worth taking, worth doing with my guy……
