This shall be considered Amendment #5 to the Spousal Immunities and Protections for Sanity (SIPS) Bill of Rights:
The caregiver has the right to laugh at situations that, by all reasonable standards, are not funny
The caregiver may laugh when the remote control is found in the freezer, when furniture is rearranged for the third time before breakfast, or when a lengthy search for a missing item ends with its discovery in a perfectly logical–but completely unexpected–place.
Such laughter shall not be interpreted as cruelty, disrespect, denial, or a lack of compassion.
Rather, it shall be recognized as a health coping mechanism, a preservation of sanity, and occasionally the only practical alternative to crying.
Furthermore, the caregiver retains the right to find humor in the absurdity of life with Lewy Body Dementia, provided that that laughter comes from love and not ridicule.
No caregiver shall be required to explain why something is funny to anyone who has not personally walked this path.
This right is hereby declared inalienable and shall remain in full force, especially on the hardest days.
