I took Matt out to Lou’s Luncheonette today to get a burger

Its a super cute roadside joint, used to be called the Freemont Diner years ago
Freemont Diner probably closed during the pandemic, and another restaurant group that has a couple of other cute spots grabbed it, rehabbed it
Burgers are fab and it has amazing milkshakes
So we went for lunch today, Matt had a beer, milkshake, burger and fries
What more could a guy want?
He has been at home most days this week except for when he goes boxing up the street
We did have family over Tuesday night for pool fun and barbq
But otherwise, he’s been house bound, so I wanted to get him out
Honestly, he seemed so much more disoriented today than I have seen him in a while
When we went outside to get into the car, the Volvo since it has AC and its a hot day here, he was wandering around everywhere but to the passenger side of the car
Getting him to sit in the car was a major thing, it took some patience and coaxing
I think he was hallucinating, unclear of his surroundings, looking, looking…..
When I asked him to put on his seatbelt, he responded by working the seat adjustments, you know the back and forth, up and down adjustments
As we got closer, noticing his disorientation, I figured I’d pre-negotiate his order with him in the car so that when we were there we wouldn’t try the patience of the guy at the counter
Its always the same guy at the counter…..I actually think he gets it
Lunch was great, as always, we mostly had the outside picnic area to ourselves until a group, clearly here to do some wine tasting, clearly having had some, maybe a lot, sat down
His orientation around the table, his food, certainly wasn’t with the grade of yester-year, but he had a good meal, enjoyed his milkshake and beer
We made it back home, into the AC, and within 5 minutes or so, he fell down in the kitchen
I don’t know exactly how that happened, just like I don’t know exactly how he got a bruise I noticed this morning on his elbow
I redirected him to his bed, laid down beside him
I stroked my fingers on his face, listened to his verbalizations
Simply said “I know it must be scary”, “I am doing everything I can, everything I can think of to help you”, “I love you”
I left him there, to rest, but that’s only a short term fix
He’s been in bed, out of bed, rearranging the pans in the kitchen, trying to stuff a rubber beer cap into the knife sharpener…..
I try to follow him on the various cameras I now have throughout the house…..trying to figure out how to balance letting him have his independence and making sure I am nearby to redirect when necessary
I noticed on camera he had stepped outside, it must be 95 degrees today and he stepped out of the door to the kitchen where I swear its always 10 degrees hotter this time of day (mid afternoon)
That was my clue to get up, go downstairs, investigate, get him back into the house
I found a large bowl, filled with water on the kitchen floor, about half had spilled out onto the hardwood floor
So I cleaned that up, found him outside, coaxed him inside in the AC
He nestled back into the bed….then Coco barked, he had to go investigate…..now he’s back in the sunroom bed
And so it will be maybe for the rest of the day
I do think, especially now in the summer’s heat, his ability to do things really had reduced to very little that isn’t familiar territory
One excursion, as short as it might have been, was certainly enough for today
Tomorrow there is boxing……
