In the midst of this journey, there are brief moments of delight
The thing that can be hard is seeing them, savoring them
Yesterday we went to one of our favorite places, VJB Winery in Kenwood
It’s run by the Belemonte family, 3 generations are involved
We often see the OG, what I call the patriarch, and his wife walking around
The wine is delicious, well priced and the food is outstanding
But most importantly, most enjoyably, the staff are all so nice and friendly
We go often enough we know many by name now
Yesterday we went mid afternoon and ordered a nice salad and ribs
Several times during lunch Matt got up and wandered this way or that, I let him knowing we were in a relatively confined place and I could just relax and keep an eye on him
After we had finished lunch, he got up again
My first instinct was to ask him “where are you going”, but I didn’t, I just let him get up, wander where ever it was he was going
He made a straight shot, seemingly quite intentionally, to the Gelato store
I just let him do his thing, kept sitting, didn’t interfere, took a sip of my wine
The next thing I noticed was the very cute young lady who worked the Gelato counter was standing just outside the doors to the little shop, with 2 cups in her hand
Matt was still standing inside the little shop, working on something, maybe putting his credit card in his wallet, or trying to put his wallet in his pocket
Eventually she walked over to me with 2 cups of very very chocolate gelato
I said thank you and thanked her for her patience, letting her know he had dementia
She was so sweet, she says “he’s just fine”
Matt made his way back to the table and we sat there enjoying this tasty gelato with the remainder of our glass of red wine
Red wine and chocolate is a really really nice combo, in my humble opinion
I was able to thank Matt for such a delicious treat, something he was able to do all on his own
The delight was pure, the moment beautiful
