We made it to Virginia
I feel like I have been working to get us here for a month!
Matt did great on the way there, even though we exited the house later than I wanted and burned all the time “cushion” I had built into the plan
He stayed with the program, followed along and was right there as we walked up to the gate as the “last call” for boarding our flight was announced
We cut it sooooo close, but we made it
During the flight Matt did great as well, I was super protective
He needed to get up to go to the bathroom, so I went with him
My biggest fear was he’d get in the bathroom, lock the door and not be able to figure out how to open it from the inside by himself
So I closed the door for him from the outside, stood by the door and informed the flight steward that he had dementia, they were kind
About 2 hours before landing, he said “can you let me get up?”
“What do you need?” “I need to get my bag”
So I found the flight map and showed him how much longer the flight was, we’d be landing in a little while but he couldn’t go get his bag now
He was starting to get ansy, so I eventually gave him a half of the new RX we got from the doc for just this
I waited, watched, as time ticked away, waited for the affects to show
This time it didn’t knock him out like before, not sure it had much effect, but I was able to keep him seated till landing
Barry had landed a few hours before, he and Chad had coordinated so that Barry could get the car, get something to eat, pick up flowers for Mom
I can’t say enough how helpful, continually, Chad has been to us, keeping my car at his house nearby the airport, making sure it has gas, getting the inspections done, tune ups, oil changes
We are all able, Barry, Matt and I, to land and smoothly move along to visit Mom, its so so so helpful, I am so so so grateful
The impact of the RX I had given him on the plan had caused him to be super slow in walking…..it was a bit challenging for the other passengers to follow behind him or pass him on the gateway
But they were all kind, no one made a scene, said a word, for that I am grateful
As we walked into the airport itself off of the jetway, a very kind airport worker looked directly at me and said “do you guys need a wheelchair?”
I am not one to look an angel in the eyes and say no. “Yes, as long as you don’t have this wheelchair planned for someone else”
So Matt got a ride from the gate to the curb
We had been so tight with time there was no ability to ask for wheelchair assistance at SFO
So we made it to Virginia to celebrate Mom’s 88th birthday!
Corny said by text: “I can’t believe it, you both had the balls to pull this off! Phew”
She is right, I feel she is right, I know she is right……it took balls, cahones

We spent Thursday with Mom
We all enjoyed a nice day together
We didn’t do a lot, hung out at her place, enjoyed the views
Went by the pool and had lunch, until the gusts of wind rose to a level we had to pack it in
We all went to dinner at the Crab Shack across the road
We celebrated her birthday by all being together, that seemed to be exactly what she wanted
Because of the first night here, Matt has a new nickname now: Hermit Crab
He got up in the middle of the night, at the same time my brother did
While my brother was in the bathroom, Matt moved into Barry’s blow up bed, taking over my brothers “shell”
So my brother, kind and loving that he is, went out to the couch to sleep the rest of the night
I didn’t know why all this happened until morning, but I did see my brother sleeping on the couch, then found Matt in his bed in the middle of the night
Chief One Sock, Hermit Crab……aren’t nicknames great?
We are all good, here, hanging out
We made it!
