The most difficult task was to find a way for people to inhabit this magnificent and natural system in numbers without destroying the very reason for people to come here.
Lawrence Halprin, The Sea Ranch-Diary of an Idea
First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him home safely to earth.
JFK, Address to Joint Session of Congress, May 24, 1961
These men inspired our fathers
Walter, was inspired by men who developed Sea Ranch, a marvel of an idea that is studied by architects and landscape architects to this day
Amos was inspired to put a men on the moon
Both men were part of something huge, both men lived in the shadow of accomplishments others got to take credit for
Both men had great reasons to be proud, great reasons we can be proud of them
I was brought to this line of thought when we went by the Sea Ranch Lodge
This quote from Halprin was on the wall there
It took a moment of my journaling time to consider how these things were happening about the same time, early 1960’s
Incredible to think back, to what life was like back then
I am so grateful of the connection Matt and his dad had to this space
When we were hiking yesterday, I’d read the street name and ask if Matt came up with that name
If he said yes, I would ask why
It was a fun game we played
The house Walter built is now in the hands of another family
With the development of AirBNB and VRBO, I appreciate that while staying at the old Busse Sea Ranch house is likely not in the cards going forward, although we do have a tenuous connection to a small possibility
We can come and enjoy this amazing place much more economically than owning something here
For that I am grateful
We needn’t truly experience a full loss
