Woke up to a voicemail from the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office
Called the number provided for the deputy, got his voicemail
On my way to my annual physical with my doc, sheriff’s office calls back
Apparently, I didn’t show up for a grand jury hearing, failed to do my civic duty
Sorry, what?
Mam, we have 3 warrants out for your arrest since you failed to show up yesterday
You can come down here in our custody for a few days till we get you in front of a judge, or you can post bond
If you go into a federal building, you will be arrested
I won’t parlay all of the details of the call, the conversation went 30 minutes, the entire drive to my doctors office
My scam alert was blinking red, but the accents on the phone were consistent with ones I would expect out of the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s office
When I said I needed to sort out if this is a scam, they even called me back from what I know as the main Isle of Wight Sheriff’s non emergency main phone number to prove they were the real deal
Plausible, but still highly suspect
I had a suspicion that this might be a scam, but it seemed real, however inconceivable it might be that I would sign up for a federal grand jury in Virginia knowing full well I live in California now
Did I space out? Did the mail go to the wrong mailbox and someone really did sign it and return it, not paying attention to who the summons was addressed to?
I finally got off the phone with a promise to talk again with the deputy at 4pm east coast time
Then I walked into my docs office
First thing the doctors team did was to take my blood pressure
I told them it would be high because of a phone call I fielded coming to the appointment
It was: squarely in stage 3 hypertension zone
They took it again, even higher
I sooooo don’t need this!
Who can I call? Jim? Kacey? OMG, Kacey will know what I need to do. She has her own law practice in the state of Virginia, she is there. I am so blessed we have her talents in our family!
I sent her a text, gave her the gist of this, as I waited for the doctor to come in
Can we talk before 4pm please?
Doctor walks in……I can’t look at my cell phone for a while, trying to focus on the conversation with the doctor but this is all running in the background, stressing me out, distracting me
Kacey replies, yes I can talk before 4, I will call you in a few….oh, and here is a link to a notice saying this is probably a scam.
It seemed so real!
After my doc’s appointment, we talked
She explained how the system, legal arrest system, really works
I have no clue, no experience, I am a law abiding citizen!
I was so rattled, I wanted to be absolutely sure, so she said call the non-emergency number directly and inquire
So I did, she was right, it was a scam, they were well aware of it
Seriously, country bubbas are now into this racket?
I so didn’t need that
The longer term issue is I really have a high blood pressure thing to deal with along with a few other not attractive stats
Caregiver health is a real concern, stress does things to a body as it gets older
I so don’t need idiots like this making it harder
I blocked the numbers that called me as the real sheriff’s office recommended
If they did call back, I did have a game plan, or 2
I would ask them if they thought they were making their momma proud by scamming people
Or fake I had a phone tracer on them, you know, just like they do on TV!
Someone needs to create an app that lets you take some level of uncomfortable revenge on idiots like this!
