Uncle Lewy

Living out loud with Lewy Body Dementia

a very personal journey. Matt, CJ and Sheba….

This started spontaneously, part therapy, part keeping our peeps informed. I am finding my voice, evolving in this. The perspective is very much from my, CJ’s, perspective; the caregiving wife.

The Gate

We have a gate now where we live

It completes the fenced in yard that keeps Sheba safe

Sheba can go out, do her businsess, manage the squirrels, paw around like a free mut

Each time we come and go by car, we have to open the gate, and close it behind us

Matt does this since I am the family driver

It used to require 4 items to be coordinated:

  • 2 steel poles
  • metal latch
  • bungee cord

The combination of these 4 things usually work best when addressed in a certain order

Opening and closing the gate confounded Matt, so we spent some time recently simplifying it

We bought a new larger latch that could hold the gate all by itself

No need for the other 3 things: steel poles or bungee cord

I had hoped it would make it easier for him

Even in all this, its really important for him to feel useful, have a purpose, things to be responsible for

This new simplified latching, well, he found a way to make it more complicated

Then I have to fix it

Sometimes, he waves me to drive through the gate, but he hasn’t opened the gate yet

So I just wait, until he figures out I can’t drive the car through an closed gate, and then opens it

Or he gives up and calls me over

This is our every day, no, this is our multiple times everyday.
